Tribal Style With Naima

moves3This is not your average belly dance! Tribal style belly dance is a contemporary art form, which evokes a history of dance and culture dating back thousands of years. It incorporates an eclectic blend of ancient music and stylings from all over the world, with a modern urban twist. Colorful costumes, face painting, and the entrancing influences of the Middle East, India, Spain, and North Africa create an exotic experience of sight and sound and movement.moves2

Tribal dance is usually done in a group of at least two or more dancers. Moves and combinations
of moves are signaled by cues given by the group leader to the other dancers. Dancers learn to move together as a tribe in unity creating the charismatic spirit of a tribal celebration.

Tribal Belly Dance allows just about anyone to participate in belly dancing as it is not as intimidating and difficult as the better know Cabaret style of dance. You do not need a perfect body, rock hard abs, and the ability to move your body in seemingly unnatural ways. Tribal Belly Dance is a great way to mix together many different ethnic dance styles, learn about yourself and your connection to other human beings, and stay in great shape while being gentle with yourself and your body.

Teacher bio: Naima Feagin

Naima began dancing in 2001 out of a need for self expression. After 5 years of Middle Eastern Dance training in Oneonta NY and London England she began taking Tribal style bellydance classes in Woodstock NY with Perizad and found that Tribal Style filled the gaps she felt were missing in her life. "There is something so special about this dance for women, first the dance healed me, then it built me up!" Pretty soon Perizad formed the dance troupe Twisted Tassels.

Naima has been a part of it since day one performing throughout the hudson valley with her dancing sisters.

In February of 2006 Naima taught her first class at the Catskill Culture Center in Catskill NY."I can't believe how well my classes went. I've seen women blossom into Warrior Goddesses right before my eyes in the year we've been dancing together, I figured it was time to expand and I am thrilled to join forces with Dancefit in Catskill! We are all very excited about our new home and the new dancing sisters we will meet along the way!MARILYN

"I am driven to pass on my knowledge of this dance form to others, to continue the chain of this ageless expression. I do not expect others to embrace the dance with the love I have for it, but I do intend for the student to come away with some understanding of this dance form, and with some lessening of the misconceptions that have surrounded Bellydancing. I also expect the student to come away with a greater sense of their self, their personal being, and a confidence arising from understanding more fully their sensual self."
